Staying motivated during the Holidays
Once again the holiday season is upon us. And for most its full of good ol family fun and cheer. For many its a barrage of holiday parties, loads of binged seasonal foods and snacks. And for us here in Chicago. A chilly morning air so cold we can't help but contemplate if those goals and gains are even worth it. Trust me they are. You don't want to find yourself scouring the gym floor for spare dumbbells come January.
So lets dive into how to stay motivated and on top of our fitness goals during a time that can tend to be a little more than chaotic and unpredictable. And for the bravest ( or craziest) of us, who dare to face the dreaded airports to travel for the season. How to manage your workouts when you might be away.We can break this into four simple options. Starting with the obvious.
Having a Plan!
As simple as that sounds. Its always best to have a game plan. Especially when it comes to your own fitness and not to mention your health. Like most goals, you need to build a foundation that will keep you accountable and on top of your own schedule. Pick a realistic amount of days you see yourself being able to make it to the gym. Choose a time for those days that works best for you. Ideally a time where you feel most energized. Lock that time in your schedule as your own personal time and stick to it. After your days and time are all set you can break your workouts down. If you're in the gym three or more days a week. Find a program split that works best for your goal. If you find yourself in the gym one or two times a week. Put together a full body workout you can do for both days.
Have a plan B!
Like I mentioned, the holiday season can be a little unpredictable. If we don't have a safety net plan for the days we really can't make it in for a workout, we are bound to fail. This can be as simple as having an at home workout to do. Or setting up a backup time slot just in case.
Hire a personal trainer!
This option is what I recommend most. Not just because I'm a fitness coach myself. But because why should I add more work and complication to these already stressful times. If you're not sure what to do, or even just don't want to do it. Why not hire someone who specializes in motivating you? And has tons of experience getting people to their goals safely and successfully. As a coach I spend tons of time writing programs checking in with clients, running my personal training sessions or small group classes. Sometimes that leaves me too busy to write my own workouts, which is where my own coach comes in to motivate and keep me accountable
Find a group fitness class!
Its too early in the morning, or you're too drained after work. But you can't help but look around the room and feel that energy. The music is pumping and the instructor has their eyes on all of you. Your only option is to give it your all. Find a class with a topic you love or a coach that pushes you and you'll find a community that will keep you coming back. I highly recommend my own small group training Critical Hit, 7am on Fridays. Dedicated to mixed martial arts drills and kettlebell movements. I may be a little biased on that one. And might tell one too many corny jokes throughout the class.
All in all, staying motivated doesn't always have to take a toll. And you always have options and support from those around you in your fitness community. Id like to close this topic out with a bonus option. Bring a friend or make a workout buddy. I know the gym seems like solitary time, but it doesn't have to be. Your friends and family keep you motivated. And can push you in a way you're comfortable with. As always, I wish you luck in your fitness journey. If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to schedule a session. Don’t hesitate to reach out. And happy holidays to all.
